Ways of Using Business Simulations

Here we provide ideas about ways of using simulation, why they are used in this way and the issues associated with using them in these ways.

Integrating with Other Learning

Here I discuss the relationship between the business simulation and prior and subsequent learning and, how different ways of using the simulation impact this. This parallels the Ways of Using Business Simulations as each of these integrate with other learning in differing ways.

Business Learning Practicalities

Here I explore the practical issues associated teaching business people. The issues and practicalities described here are likely to be obvious to the experienced tutor but may be useful for newcomers to training, business people and senior management who get involved in training.

Team Formation

As my simulations are designed to be used by several small groups of learners. This page explores how to set up these teams so as to ensure that participants can learn from each other and not be overwhelmed or underwhelmed! As such it covers team size and functional, gender, management level and psychological mix.

The Learning Room

Room Layout is crucial to ensuring good adult learning and this explores how you should and should not layout rooms when using simulations (or layout rooms to assure good adult learning).

Training Equipment

There is nothing quite as awful as arriving at a training venue and finding that you do not have access to the proper equipment.

Preparing to run a Business Simulation

This provides a check list of what you should consider when getting ready to run a simulation on your course.

Time Tables

This explores how to time tabling a simulation and the issues at different stages in the simulation.

Simulation Review

During the simulation small teams of learners work independently on the simulation. At the end of the simulation to share, embed and ensure transfer, these teams should come together to explore, compare and review their actions. Here I explore the review purpose, team presentations, the tutor's role and choosing a winner.

Ancillary Tasks

These are additional tasks that add to the business simulation .For example, learners can be asked to prepare a formal plan or a presentation for the review. Here several tasks a described and, for each, I can provide a copy of a brief that details the task for the learners.

Running with Geographically Spread Teams

Although my business simulations are normally run with the whole group in one location they can be run with the learners in teams spread around the world! This page explores the benefits and problems with this, how you do it and the practicalities of tutoring.
